I love this episode for the glimpse deep into the psyches for everybody. Seeing Zhaan get deep into her dark urges to fight Maldis was one thing because the other priest had to work to draw it out of her, but here...it's all herself. And of course I'd very much like to say "I would never", and maybe I really would stay strong and resist, but maybe...maybe I'd cave in an instant if offered something I desired as much as they all want to go home.

I remember being absolutely enraged watching this as a teenager. And pilot is upset but they justify losing an arm due to the fact that they are in service to Moya. It’s so sad.

The first time I saw this, I recall being boggled that the show went there with the characters so early in its run -- or at all -- even aside from my gaping at the actions of Rygel, D'Argo, and Zhaan. I'd been a Star Trek:TNG and Stargate SG-1 viewer in the years before this, where the core cast are presented as The Good Guys, and wasn't prepared for the show to present main characters as capable of such things. This is, in my opinion, why Farscape is part of what paved the way for a show like Battlestar Galactica 4-5 years later to have main characters who made terrible, sometimes very wrong choices, but who people still rooted for. Ron Moore even referenced Farscape in an early commentary, though I took exception to his complaint about Farscape being too hard for new viewers to get into if they dropped in during the last season (and how his show wouldn't be like that), since BSG was also pretty impenetrable to casual viewers by season 4. When he said it during season 1 I'm sure he didn't know yet the strange, twisty paths his own show would be going down.
