Also late to the party today -- busy work week here -- so I unfortunately (or maybe fortunately 😏) don't have much new to add here. But I do want to join in the "this was THE episode" chorus a bit. Some here will be old enough to remember an advertising campaign that started in the late 80s from GM's Oldsmobile division (a brand that has since gone defunct). Oldsmobile was concerned that they were seen as an old stodgy brand, a type of car driven only by rich old folks, so they redesigned some of their vehicles and introduced them with the tag line "this is not your father's Oldsmobile." [Side note: this campaign was eventually seen as contributing to the brand's demise; turns out, a lot of people still *wanted* their father's Oldsmobile. But I digress.] Anyway, this "not your father's _____" thing sort of entered the cultural zeitgeist for a while -- I still hear it now and then today, in fact, but it was pretty much a meme back when Farscape was first airing. Hence, a lot of people pointed out that this was the episode that demonstrated that Farscape was Not Your Father's Sci Fi. It was, for me, the moment when I was certain this show was going to take me on some rides I'd never been on before. There were inklings of it before, but this was, like, the moment where the fact that Anything Can Happen in this show really came into sharp focus. This episode was painful and infuriating in places, but it also put the viewing public on notice that the people making the show weren't messing around. It wasn't going to be all sunshine and jokes about Rygel's bodily functions. Oh, there'll still be a lot of light to balance the dark, but boy, is there dark in this show. You have no idea. And the thing is, after this episode, as angry as I was at some of the characters, I also was tremendously impressed at the risks the people making this show were willing to take to tell their story. I think the job of good Science Fiction, maybe good fiction in general, is to push boundaries and ask questions that don't always have easy answers. They asked the question "how far will desperate people go for a little hope?" And the answer was not pretty. But I think it might have been pretty real. And that was when I became fully sold on Farscape.

Since folks have already said much of what makes this episode so good/pivotal, I'll chime in with some assorted bits that stayed with me: - The way it opens so sharply en media res–and with *that* scene (👀)–grabs the viewer's attention in such an expert way. And it's a sign right out of the gate that this episode is gonna Go There. - John not testing the hooch before he drinks it. And Aeryn making a note of it. - That little moment when John puts his hand on Aeryn's hip and she knocks it away. Very well acted by Claudia and Ben. And a good choice by everyone involved to not dwell on it. They just let it be a quiet but noticeable part of the scene. - Pilot needing to tell the DRD more than once to stop treating his wound. You can read that in multiple ways. - The alien jargon in this one was a step above, too. "Frell" is the obvious one. And ya gotta love it whenever someone drops a mivonks joke. But frodank? I saw you noticed it too. There's just something about it that's fun to say. - The costume and set design. Especially Namtar. 👏 - John juking Rygel. It makes me laugh every time. I could go on but I'm in TL;DR territory at this point. Nice note about Doug Jones tho; he's been one of my favorite actors for a loooooong time. Unparalleled physical acting IMO. I love Saru, and I would've loved to see DJ in Farscape. Another banger coming up next week! Looking forward to it.
