I always thought that Gaius Baltar and his cult are precursors to story of Jesus Christ and his followers. Am I mad? The dude looks kinda jesus-y (apart from being white, but Jesus was whitewashed anyway).

It's possible to take the idea of angels as non-religious in nature, or at least satisfying both the religious and 'scientific' perspectives. At its core, BSG suggests that history is not linear but cyclical. While the show itself doesn't explicitly confirm human-cylon create-destroy cycles existing beyond the timelines of original Earth and Kobol, it's not a stretch to think that these cycles have been going on for longer, potentially for millions of years. With this in mind, the notion that certain patterns, behaviors, or even consciousness could imprint themselves on the fabric of the universe given enough 'cycles' isn't a stretch of the imagination. I believe that consciousness or personalities could become a sort of universal pattern that can exist for millions over years. My initial seed for this idea is the concept that 'All along the Watchtower' seems to be like an eternal artifact in some way, constantly re-emerging across different civilizations. There is some precedent to this theory in real-life too. Morphic resonance is a concept proposed by Rupert Sheldrake - it's a hypothesis that suggests memory is inherent in nature and that natural systems inherit a collective memory from all previous things of their kind. While the 'angels' or beings that appear to Six and Gaius, as well as shared visions and prophetic dreams by Roslin, obviously enforce that there are forces at work beyond the understanding of both humans and cylons, but, in my opinion, these don't have to 'God' at least not in the traditional/Christian sense. These beings or 'God' in general could be interpreted as manifestations of the deeply imbedded 'patterns' or 'memory' in the cycle itself, or in other words a manifestation of the universes memory, guiding characters in ways that ensure the repetition of history, or perhaps trying to lead them to a new outcome, one that brings humans and cylons together, once and for all.
