I think Bill has the strongest introductions of any companion. Arguably Clara holds that title from Asylum of the Daleks, however it can also be argued that isn't her characters true first episode since it's a splinter Clara. Pearl as Bill is truly fantastic. I had the pleasure of meeting her last year and she was truly wonderful, and somehow even more beautiful in person. I know others mentioned the photo of Susan, but just to add to it, that technically means the Doctor only has true family photo's on his desk. His wife and his granddaughter.

I think I rewatched this ep a year and a half ago. I remember the sheer amount of exposition flashbacks bothering me, but my first watch (and I'm sure watching it with your reaction will be the same) as my return to DW felt very refreshing yet familiar. After Clara dominating the narrative for so, so long, it felt good to finally see Moffat writing a fresh start (though he couldn't resist calling back to her near the end, lol. imo it's even less justified than Matt Smith being in Deep Breath). I'm sure you'll touch upon this in the discussion (maybe you even have in the reaction) but it's also good to have more of that mentor/teacher figure dynamic, which Capaldi is perfect for. Also harkens back to Classic Who. And Twelve being a lecturer is just perfect. I also like Nardole's role, curious what you think about that too -- I think in this episode he's way more likeable than in his previous appearances.
