To very loosely quote Merphy Napier, “I never thought that I would cry over a character that is introduced to be a disruption and a destroyer and a monster and then get killed and his arc is over”. (You could have commented on this, I haven’t finished your commentary yet I’m still watching it) (edit: yes you did, no clue why I didn’t assume so lol. Keeping the original text after but it’s all stuff you cover) Gardar’s character is so incredible because he genuinely had good intentions for his family. But given Norse culture, and the desire for “striking first before something before the other side does” his whole family is punished for it. The Gardar mini arc lives rent free in my head to this day. But as you said, i recall some watchers during its airing were actually pretty bored by this mini arc. However, like you also said, most people adored it, as the viewers who were turned off from the more introspective and slower side of vinland left after 2x6.

Finally caught up my VS reactions. Stellar season, and this is a peak episode both in the context of that season, and as a standalone. Gardar had more screentime this episode alone than probably the rest of the season combined, while half of it him feeling his life slip away. And its gorgeous, bittersweet, and simply sad. As you say, the production truly did an excellent job. They captured the tone perfectly as they showed, not told, the inner remorse, regret, and futility felt by Gardar in final hour. It only drives home the series' message even more to resist those forces that brought him to that end.

2023-08-15 09:07:51 Yeah this is quite the tragic episode. They had to stretch it a bit so that the episode ended where it did, but I'm glad they chose to go this route. Having Gardar's end be in the middle of an episode would've felt wrong. And I think they did a great job with it. I don't know who came up with all the additions but I'd guess they came from either Yabuta or Seko, maybe even both. And yes Kobayashi's boards really worked their wonders with that, but this was always going to be one of his episodes since it's one of the central chapters of the Slave arc. And yeah I agree with the shoutout to Snake's VA, he's been excellent. I loved his work in JoJo's, where he was equally great. So when I found out that he was going to be Snake, I was very excited. I still hear his voice from JoJo in there at some points.
