I love how both Thorfinn and Canute use their dead ‘fathers’ as their mental mentors. Except, Thorfinn sees Askeladd as alive and well, and as a guiding hand. Whereas, Canute sees King Sweyn as a decapitated head, almost stalking him and mocking him. Again they are such good foils to each other! I’ve said it before but Mayumi Saco is undoubtedly one of the best VAs I have come across. I sincerely hope in the future she does more anime or I come across her in another project. She is able to deliver one of the most realistic sobbing breakdowns I have ever heard. You’re right. It’s hard to listen to. Arnheid and Gardar’s situation absolutely breaks my heart. It’s also the perfect bridge between Thorfinn deciding his ideals, to the inevitability of Canute’s arrival. Thorfinn’s ideals mean that his life is never going to be easy. But that’s why Askeladd called it a ‘battle’. This is his fight for the rest of his life. On the topic of VAs, I’m incredibly excited for the other series you are watching. You are going to have soo much fun picking up voices that you have heard already!

I find it very interesting that it's Thorfinn's first real test and he immediately breaks his vow. Also I prefer the manga translation here because it mentions the vow. "Will you hold true to your oath of peace? Or do you surrender to the way of battle, to save this man?" vs "Will you remain a pacifist, or will you fight him to help someone else?" Like yeah, it's the same thing basically but the CR subs feel awkward and stilted to me. Not to mention the mistranslated line in this episode. One thing that I love about this episode is that they sort of flipped the script when it comes to violence and soundtrack. Usually, particularly in S2, they accompany some sort of somber music with the action/violence to make the viewers feel a little conflicted. This time though, we get that from Thorfinn. So they hype up Thorfinn fighting again with the soundtrack and sound design, while my man is out here struggling. That one shot of his face trembling as Snake is approaching and Thorfinn's about to lunge is my favorite shot of the episode. And yes, the parallels of Sweyn and Askeladd appearing next to Canute and Thorfinn are so good. Canute is haunted by his dead father and it just sends him further down the deep end, while Thorfinn has Askeladd on his shoulder keeping him in check on his road to become a true warrior. They both had very conflicting thoughts about their father figures, but they way they live with their memory couldn't be further apart.

I love that Thorfinn breaks his vow the first time he gets challenged. Life long automatisms dont go that fast away. And it really makes him thinking about that first method later on.
