2023-08-02 17:05:40 Easily the best episode since Oath, I might actually like it a bit more. Gardar and Arnheid's situation is so fucked, it's not even funny. Him being apologetic actually just makes it worse for Arnheid. He's trying to fix a situation that's way beyond fixing and Arnheid not being able to tell him about Hjalti is the cherry on top. All she can do is apologize for losing their son without actually telling him. And then she gets put in the impossible situation where she's pretty much forced to cut him free. Now onto one of my favorite scenes in the series. Thorfinn is on a path to redemption but like he said, simply not killing anymore is not redemption. Otherwise this show would've ended at Oath. He has to work real hard for it. Yukimura does not hold back when it comes to Thorfinn. To put it simply, he fucked up in the prologue and now for the rest of the story he's gotta pay for it. Sure he'll have happy moments like in 2x10 or 2x13 but the dead are always gonna be there to keep him grounded. I also like the goal he sets himself, that a village would be a satisfactory result for him. And the Hordaland callback from chapter 2 is simply iconic. I remember being excited for that scene back in your 1x8 reaction. The prologue is what makes the subsequent arcs so much more satisfying. And Einar acts as the audience surrogate in this. He's there for Thorfinn to have someone to bounce his ideas and ask some questions that we'd be having. Obviously the big question is about defending yourself from outside invaders. And while Einar makes a fair and right point, I absolutely love Thorfinn's response. "It is meaningless to wage war for peace." (Manga translation>>>anything Crunchyroll spits out, don't even get me started on some of the sub choices in 2x16/2x17) It shows that Thorfinn is as hard on himself as Yukimura is and that he is firmly set on making up for his shameful past. Finally I have to mention the production side for this one. It might be the best looking episode of S2, when it comes to character designs. Pretty much every shot of the characters was not only on point, but they all had that little extra polish that made it all the better. Also great thumbnail choice, the panels with the dead surrounding Thorfinn are some of the most detailed shots in the manga and I think they've adapted them quite well 👌

I love how Hordaland and the talk he had with her is how he recalls Vinland. Shows how important that moment was back in season 1

Goob

The way this series has such a tonal shift but blends the moments of all of S1 into S2 and doesn’t let you forget any of them is so masterful. I don’t mind what people say about Yukimura, but it’s pretty set in stone he is a master at character writing. Every character in this series is so fascinating that every single one has fans wishing for a spin off of their life. Even Snake, a character we basically so far have only been able to absorb through his dialogue, is just so damn good. Sverkel as well. Just man. I cannot sing the praises of this season enough.
