You know, Canute's whole problem of being afraid to downsize his army reminds me of something Askeladd said in S1. He was talking about how when the Romans came to England or Wales they shared their knowledge and technology with the Celts who lived there. They conquered of course, but lived alongside them. And when the Anglo-Saxons came they did no such thing and now the Danes are doing the same thing with even greater violence. Canute feels like the English could never grow to like him, but it's a self fulfilling prophecy. Canute's the one in power, so it's sort of up to him to offer a hand and his refusal to do so is the cause of his current problems. Him wanting to use Olmar makes it all the worse. Canute aside, this was probably the most lighthearted episode of the season so far. Olmar is hilarious and i love that they adapted that cover page of him combing his hair into the actual episode and the introduction to Bug-Eyes is fantastic. Finally the real Thorfinn is here. Gotta feel for Leif though, it's sad not seeing him perk up immediately when the name Thorfinn falls. It has been 16 years though (4 if you count their meeting in the prologue), so I can hardly blame him for not getting his hopes up to soon.

Im, I have to say. Even though it wasn't intentional, the backdrop change between the reaction and the discussion is a nice touch, maybe you should stick with it.

Also I saw it mentioned in the YT comments, but it's quite a shame that the interview that recently came out with Yukimura has a few light spoilers in it. It's such a good interview and for anyone who doesn't mind light spoilers or is caught up on the manga, I highly recommend it. He also talks about his first manga, Planetes (Highly recommend reading that for anyone. It has such a personal touch and oozes with Yukimura's personality) and some more personal questions about being a mangaka. Just make sure to watch the full interview, around 37 minutes, and not the cut down version.

The visual of Canute instantly chucking his sword on the ground straight after his fight with Wulf, paired up with his line “Kings are like swords” is just sheer perfection for me. With no need of a internal monologue from him you can just instantly tell how he is feeling about himself. Just as his sister Estrid said “But my brother seems like he’s in a lot of pain”. I’m soo glad you caught on to Thorgil and his relationship with Olmar. Thorgil is actually very family focused and genuinely cares about them. Yes, we know about his misguided admiration of his father but everything we have seen of him so far he seems to really care for his little brother (minus the necklace of ears but let’s be real that’s pretty tame to the shit that he would be capable) and has his best interest at heart. Well … what Thorgil thinks is his best interest anyway. Also I can’t believe I live in a world now that BUG EYES is animated and has a VA. That’s the crazy thing about reading manga is that it’s genuinely surreal sometimes to actually have moments or characters be animated. And their choice of VA for him is just perfection. Definitely a set up episode but very important set up and it’s good to have some of the levity that is sometimes not present in the anime adaptation. Still won’t forgive them for not animating the panel last episode of Thorfinn and Einar clasping both hands, biggest grins of their faces, and practically dancing together because they found out they’ll be a free earlier than they thought. The fandom was pretty heartbroken at the loss of that panel 😄 malso a lot of missed moments of Einar being the best himbo in the earlier parts of the season but hey can’t really complain too much as this season has been amazing. It’s just what happens with manga to anime adaptations.
