rei when shinji comes into her place and sees her naked: -.- rei when she sees he is using his father's glasses: :/ rei when shinji falls on her: -.- rei when shinji talks bad about his father: >:/ I love Rei. ah so much to say but yeah not yet lol. Just again that I really like her, in my top 3 and I’m excited to see you see her journey (and the rest ofc but it’s a rei episode so) Ritsuko and Misato are about the same age yeah. And hey I think many develop a crush on Misato while watching can't wait for the next one

I’m watching this for the first time through you and am definitely starting to enjoy it now. The characters are all charming and/or interesting in different ways and I’m curious to see where it all goes. Also I was wondering, is something holding up your reaction to the new AoT episode? It’s quite long, so is editing taking more time than originally anticipated? I know you mentioned before how you’ve had a lot going on, I’m not trying to pressure you— the thought just occurred to me.

Others may comment this, but no one has so far so I'll give it a shot. The whole "teen boy is so clumsy and awkward that he accidentally gropes the girl he has a crush on" is a huge, HUGE anime trope. Imagine the most obnoxiously anime reaction to ensue from that, because it does: boy awkwardly stammers (how could he end up in this situation, it looks like he's some perv but it's not what it looks like!), girl blushes or yells at him, and most of all, slaps him. So this episode is making fun of and subverting that trope by taking it and placing it into a world with brutally realistic human reactions. All the humor is sucked out. It's not bombastic or loud. The ridiculousness of the situation is enough to elicit a bit of a chuckle, as you showed, but then it lingers and it becomes awkward, and in the uncomfortable way not the charming way. What's more, Rei doesn't react. She doesn't make a big deal out of it and hit him, anything to break the tension of the scene. The discomfort lingers... But then, she slaps him in the next scene for something completely unrelated. Everything is completely out of order! With one action, the story tells us everything about its metatextual objectives and continues to deepen the enigma that is Rey Ayanami. Haven't watched the discussion yet, so there's a chance you know all the context behind why this scene happens, but since you tend to actually consume good media I thought I'd enlighten you with some trash anime history 😂

Also, I'm loving your reactions to and commentary of Ritsuko. I'll be honest, because Misato is *right there*, I very much overlooked Ritsuko on my first watch and failed to fully appreciate her. But as you've noted she's very fascinating -- all the characters have more than meets the eye. And as you noted in one of the previous episodes, her dynamic with Misato is a joy to watch. Finally, yes, Misato herself is endlessly charming.

Storyboard – Junichi Satou https://i.imgur.com/2G30mKF.png Like I said last week, Satou is one of the most influential figures in anime. It's said that there are no women in Japan born in the '90s who grew up without seeing something made by him. Here he was still employed at Toei Animation and went under pen-names whenever working outside of the studio and is fresh off from having given the Sailor Moon reins to Kunihiko Ikuhara. That and Evangelion are slightly different in tone, but it definitely didn’t stop Satou from delivering here. The titular character of Sailor Moon is also voiced by Kotono Mitsuishi, who voices Misato. Also an extremely stacked episode animator wise. To name a few: Hiroki Kanno and Hidenori Fukuoka, the character designer and one of the main animators for Brotherhood respectively are both credited. Shinya Takahashi as well, the man who blessed Shingeki with his presence for these few cuts on 4x20: https://i.imgur.com/faWtkuq.mp4 The backgrounds for the episode were done by Kyoto Animation; unarguably the most humane animation studio in Japan. Today you will never see them work outside of their own shows, so it’s great seeing them here. I don’t think many go into Evangelion thinking they’re going to get a Satou x KyoAni collab. Older anime productions are fun and a geek like me can find the end credits almost as interesting as the episodes themselves. Hardest design to draw, methinks: https://i.imgur.com/5stXc2b.png

Ah the iconic Eva OST: cicadas! I think it's pronounced as "sikadas" but I might be wrong :)

Oh I haven’t watched/recorded it yet. Waiting till I know for sure I have enough time to allocate to it. My attempt with shifting some things didn’t work out, I still didn’t feel confident about the timing. I also decided that I wanted to do bit of a recap by revisiting some of discussions.

Shiera Seastar

Hehe! Also is it just me or are you pronouncing Ritsuko as "Ritsuku"? Just another random thing I noticed

Chelle

Gotcha, thanks for the update 👍 love how seriously you take things like this, looking forward to it for sure

Didn't thought about the episode title that much. Just thought there will be another Rei focused episode hahaha But I've read some comments here and with the discussion of this reaction, I've got my own theories but I will not try to elaborate them cause they need context to certain things I already know about the show. Still not sure if that's true. Otherwise I enjoyed this episode a lot and did you forgot to talk about the new angel or did I miss that discussion portion?

tom

Ramiel is MY angel <3

I agree with you on Prometheus. It really is underrated.
