Hello everyone, so three episodes in now, what are your thoughts on the new blu-ray subs ?

I do have access to a blu-ray version which has the ADV subs and the original ending song.

TLDR - I recommend ADV sorry for the long comment god I just love this show so much So the ADV subs are the OG ones, the subs you have watched for 3 episodes so far are the ones Netflix commission ed when they finally got Eva on their platform in 2019 (it believe it wasn't available legally in the West for about a decade until then as ADV went bankrupt in the late 2000's and the rights had lapsed, also the reason Netflix couldn't use the ADV subs - the licensing was all murky, they couldn't use the ADV English dub as well so they commissioned a new one, also couldn't license the ending song but hey at least the episodes were in remastered quality) After that at least a couple of Eva bluray sets were released in 2020 and 2021 I think which have both the ADV and Netflix versions these are the blurays you are using I believe. So I do remember looking at comparisons of the two sub versions in 2019 and I recall two things. 1) The ADV version generally seemed like a more warmer and natural translation of spoken words whereas the Netflix one felt more colder/literal/almost like a written version. Third Child vs Third Children is one iconic example. 2) The other change I recall is more egregious as the Netflix version at one point washes over a certain characters interaction in a regressive manner. That's all I can say without spoiling lol So I recommend ADV subs haha ALSO I almost forgot each episode has a slightly different cover of the ending song!! (26 versions I believe) Sidenote about the English dub - yes watching in Japanese is the better choice especially for a first watch for Filmbuff but comparing the two English dubs the main characters in the ADV one are fine (the side characters are hilariously awful in a very 90's dub way) but I think it's still better than the Netflix dub which has much better voice acting but feels cold and lifeless compared with the rambunctious 90's one. Which is without even mentioning the ADV dubs Misato VA, such an amazing voice, husky and so full of life and spirit (probably was one reason Misato is my favorite character of this show, fits her so well) Anyways in the future for a rewatch would definitely recommend the ADV dub if nothing else just for Misato's voice alone

I don't have anything to say about the subtitles since I've only fully seen the Netflix/GKIDS version, but if you have access to a version with the original endings then you should watch that version for sure. There are also two scenes in the show that have versions of the ending music in them that had the music removed in the Netflix/GKIDS release, much to the detriment of these scenes IMO. Does your other version include these too? You call it a Blu-ray, but since the ADV subs were only ever available on VHS and DVD, I wonder if your version is frankensteined from the recent Blu-ray release with the old ADV subs and ED's manually added in, or if it is just the ADV DVD release ( the Platinum Collection)? I've also heard there is a pretty serious mistranslation in the ADV subs for The End of Evangelion, but I'm not 100% sure. Might be worth looking into, though there is probably somebody here who knows the answer to that.

I emplore you to change to ADV subtitles because it's easier to understand and has a smoother flow of translation. 1st/2nd/3rd Child is the correct term because that's how you speak about your son/daughter. The original ending is basically "Rei I Theme" which fits the mysterious and enigmatic person of Rei Ayanami which accompany the ending visual instead of "Fly Me to the Moon" jazzy feel-good mood. Some dialogue lose their impact because of the delivery certain key words but nothing is lost in translation plotwise. But there's a clear exception with this one character that would enter spoiler territory. I have the same problem with your set of FMAB subtitles. Although in contrast these are very loose off with wacky translations or figure of speech which feels odd. I do remember them changing something like "comfort them" to "be receptor" around episode 9 with Winry and Hughes. Imagine changing something like "tatakae" - fight, go battle! into don't give up! often leading to confusion which you may have noticed. If you're still undecided you can compare the two but it's up to you honestly. Often literal translation of what the characters are saying in japanese isn't the best when translating to english. There needs to be some proper rewording and gramatical structure to allow the viewer comprehend the message behind what the characters are trying to convey. Edit: I'm not completly sure honestly the Netflix subs are good, I'm not saying they are bad or anything. Sometimes is better, others not so much, you'd have to take an unbiased stance because I definitively am.

I can't say anything about the subs, but Fly Me to the Moon is part of the Evangelion experience and I can't imagine not having it at the end of every episode. So if there is a way for you to watch the episodes with the actual ending then I'd highly recommend it.

I’m not 100% sure but I’d probably recommend the ADV subs

I know the show almost word by word through the ADV subs. I am watching along with my copy, and see the subs on your full lenght version, and they are 90% of the time different. Not from a meaning, but as if someone took their time with a thesaurus to rewrite all the subs. I much prefer the ADV subs. And also, it would be great if you saw the original endings. They're different in every episode, so I hope you catch up on them.

I guess a good option here would be for Im to just get hold of the ADV DVD (Platinum Version) or whatever you mentioned (I think this is the version I watched a couple years ago, the quality was perfectly fine) that way he can absolutely make sure those 2 scenes have the ED music in them and also make sure that he gets the director's cut of Eps 21-24 which I think is more important than the differences in subs (even though ADV still better)

My personal opinion is that the differences between the subs are exaggerated and I don't think anyone's experience of the show is hindered by watching one or the other. The endings missing are the real bummer. the "blu-ray with the ADV subs," eh? any space on the thousand sunny? rip yibis.

Hey Filmbuff, as someone who has watched Eva well over 10 times I would definitely recommended watching with the original ADV subs and highly recommend to watch with the original ending songs. With the endings they are actually slightly different in every episode (different singers, instruments etc.) and actually somewhat reflect the episode that they are associated with. Makes for a much better experience and IMO the true way eva was intended to be watched.

Also late to this. Surprised we're doing this after three episodes rather than before but I'm guessing someone mentioned the different sub variations to you. I watched the Netflix ones originally and think they're honestly fine, but I've only seen a select few clips from the ADV and can't recall how they were like. If people think the original is better then I'd say go with that, plus the ED song I alluded to earlier. The one thing I will say is I hope the alternative subs you have are kept simple like the ones you've been watching on. I've seen some of the ADV ones and the font is a bit irregular and the shape will grow and shrink etc, so I hope it's not like that

Alright folks, so I’m set to switch over to the other version 👌🏼 Though I must admit, the new blu-ray version looks better, far more natural, with a lot of the original grain intact. The image of the older version is a bit more saturated in comparison.

If you end up liking the blu-ray version more is totally fine you go back to it
