The first 10ish mins of the post episode portion is just the external recorder audio, issue with the recording. The footage kicks in after that.

Shinji is voiced by the legendary Megumi Ogata - one of the best seiyuu out there. She gives fantastic nuance to all her characters.

Goverments hiding details of what actually happened? Unheard of really lol. A great reaction and review! Is great to hear your insights and theories you already have. I love Rei she's one of my favorites and I love her development I also like Shinji a lot and feel he gets way too much flack sometimes, but I think I will keep my thoughts for next one, is it because I am tired and I'd just write a rant that doesn't make much sense? partly yeah.

I think that something that keeps this anime current today is precisely the production quality. The shots and cuts are very good, even the titles make it very recognizable. In general, I think they dared to do some things that to this day I have not seen in any other anime.

You can really tell how much effort was put into the presentation of the show. Everything from the script to the cinematography helps to create a cohesive tone/feel throughout. Really incredible attention to detail.

Masterful storyboards. So resourceful. Funny you're praising the lingering stills and close-ups when it's partly due to the TV series being produced with insufficient funding and staff availability, lol. I recall Anno saying that there were never more than three Gainax employees actually working on an episode at the same time. It's kinda ironic considering the rebuild movies are some of the most expensive films to ever get made in Japan. The same franchise experienced both ends of the spectrum. I think it's also worth knowing while watching the series that Anno was severely depressed throughout the production and even attempted to take his own life after its conclusion. More on that once we get there as it's easier to talk about not needing to tip-toe around spoilers. Love Suzuhara's Kansai dialect. So distinct.

FilmBuff was talking about watching JJK recently so I'm wondering if he's finished watching it and looked into the JJK 0 movie which is a necessary prequel to watch. The main character there is voiced by the iconic Megumi Ogata.

After many years of being a fan finally had to sub to the Patreon for Eva! I do agree that the pre digital cel animation aesthetic is so beautiful! Not only does it feel more dirty, gritty and real the limitations at the time really infused every shot with a deliberate purpose. Whereas now in the digital era unless maybe an auteur is involved a lot of anime tend to look too clean, airbrushed, plastic-y, and for lack of a better word, 'digital' haha. I guess you could say the same about live action movies as well, comparing the film vs digital eras.

The voice actor of the character talking, when you said "Hey is that him again?" is actually Zekes voice actor, yes. I couldn't find anything about the other characters VA though (from EP 2). I think he just sounds similar.

It was Koyasu too. He was uncredited on the second episode, but he's credited when the character appears next. It's the 委員 in the end credits. Koyasu is credited for 13 unnamed characters throughout the show, so it's gonna be pretty funny seeing Im pointing him out over and over again, lol. All of the main cast are credited for a bunch. Hayashibara for example, Rei's voice actress, is credited for 34 characters including Pen Pen.

I never noticed the parallel between no one calling shinji at the beginning and then shinji almost getting called at the end, a lot of symbolism, parallels, and dramatic irony in this series.
