Storyboard – Atsushi Kobayashi Direction – Youji Satou https://i.imgur.com/7uyTZYz.jpg The best and most self-confident storyboard of the season so far. Kobayashi came here to underline all of the praises he’s been getting, not only by the viewers, but by Yabuta and Yukimura themselves as well. This is also the second Satou episode in a row - it’s hard to know what exact directorial ideas stem from the board itself, but beautifully realized by him too nonetheless. The use of Yamada’s score was perfect, and I loved how silent the episode was overall. Silence is one of the best tools you have and it’s used well here. The visual style they decided to go with for Thorfinn’s ‘demons’ in his nightmares was sick. Resourceful reuse of the beheading cut from an earlier board of his as well. Those nightmare-flashbacks were also fully anime original by the way; just elevating the already great manga. Out of the ones credited, I believe that top billed Tsuyoshi Yoshioka was the main animation supervisor for the episode. He was one of the stronger ones for the prologue as well, albeit understandably not as frequent of a presence as some others considering he has bigger and better paying stuff to work on, like Hosoda’s Belle and the newest and final installment in the Evangelion reboot films. Overall a really nice showing on the drawing front - many intricate character close-ups and solid layouts throughout. I’m now also confident in saying that the absence of facial features in distance drawings is a choice. Considering how detailed and hard to animate the models are, it’s an understandable and sensible compromise. Love the Minamino kit!

Definitely the best episode of the season so far! I'm quite attached to Einar already lol. I loved the moment showing the hedgehog lifting the little hedgehog and then it cuts back to Einar and Thorfinn.. Love it. The barn scene was just phenomenal. I'm so impressed

Yeah Kobayashi's love for close ups really shows in this one, specifically the mouth ones. Also the comedy bit with Einar thinking of Arnheid is very reminiscent of Atli and Torgrim demonstrating their love in front of Willibald. The detailed hand shots are all Yukimura though. He's talked about this before. He always tries to put as much detail into character's hands as possible, since the hands tell how much a person has worked or been through. A character can lie however much they want, but their hands will reveal the truth no matter what.

Loooove this episode! Easily makes top 5 of the series. Great to see some unique and killer animation during Thorfinn’s dream sequence. This gave me the rush I felt during the top tier episodes in season 1, very unique feeling and as you said, “no one’s doing it like this.” Vinland Saga is top tier in character moments like this
