Gosh this episode is so heavy. Realizing the story of the dead lady in the lake actually being someone I came to really like in this series was gut wrenching. So many sad moments

I totally agree with you about the whole thing of the addictive atmosphere of Dark. However, the irony of this is that the same reason that made us got addicted and immersed in the show vibes is also the same reason that made some other people unable to continue the show. A friend of mine said that he didn’t like the dark and gloomy atmosphere of the show and the way there are a lot of long silent shots with no dialogue in display. He described it as a “dead atmosphere”. I tried to convince him to continue watching until episode 5 of season 1 hoping that the reveal of Mikkel/Michael will hook him, and he said he will try at some point.

That T-Shirt is so cool. The perfect motive for Dark merch

I saw the Tannhaus book in my local library some months ago, I’ll find a place for it on my shelf soon enough 😩

The fact that the body of Tannhaus' granddaughter wasn't found also provides a convenient way for Tannhaus to explain why he suddenly has this baby, if someone would be asking him. So, he could claim that it's her and that she stayed with him when his son and daughter-in-law drove off.

Regarding the different Marthas, there is a great 3-part video on you-tube explaining her chronology ("Alt Martha POV Chronological timeline"). I highly recommend this for everyone who has finished the whole show and is still a little bit confused about this topic.

This episode is one of my favorite.

I've said before that this show is the most consistent in terms of quality across episodes, but I obviously couldn't give away that this one was extra exceptional to me. Some tragically beautiful resolutions to a number of threads that will help set the stage for the final stretch here! But so much of this episode gets me, from Ellies frustration with her father for holding out hope that others are still alive only to then lose him. Katharina being beaten to death by her own mother, then to have her come home and beat her past self again. Jonas thinking he finally made his own decision to then be killed by Martha (And falling on the family tree like it's angel's wings, perfection.). Your only description sure is fitting, "Pain". But like in the best way. It's almost silly that immediately after Katarina's death, they use the Hosier's song 'In The Woods Somewhere' but cut out one of the most applicable lyrics. In the song it talks about hearing a woman's scream in the woods but then coming across a wounded fox, so he "raised a stone to end it's pain". The music choices remain on point.

Such a sad but beautiful shot at the end, with the family tree as wings of an angel as Jonas lies dying.

A small detail that I've always liked and I don't think it was a coincidence, we all know how good Dark is with details. when Helene comes back after she killed Katharina we see young Katharina and on her t-shirt is written "liebe" "love" that is what I think the only thing she wanted from her mother was to be loved but what did she get? She got smacked and who knows what else, and that has certainly happened more often. Katharina was my favorite character if you imagine what she went through her childhood and yes she wasn't perfect growing up the stuff what she did to Regina wasn't great. But she was a very good mother and she was willing to do anything to protect her children, or to save Mikkel. Her death was very sad for me

Both Peter and Katharina dying this episode while trying to protect and rescue those they love - it's incredibly sad.

MrSmokinDragon

Katharina is a bully. That her mother, another bully, made her this way, is exceedingly sad, but she is still a bully everyone is afraid of. One of the many embodiments of generational sin in the series.
