Rory is a nestene duplicate. You may remember them from all the way back in the first episode 'Rose'. The nestene consciousness Eccleston and Rose faced.

Annie

I think they were conscious that implying Vincent ended his life because of the Tardis exploding was in bad taste, and I believe that's why River says "one of his last paintings," to make it clear that while Vincent was in really bad shape when he painted it, it wasn't the very last one.

Frank J

Regarding Vincent, I agree with the above comment by Annie. But I think you always have to be conscious of the fact that he (and other historic figures, like Winston Churchill, Mme Pompadour, Queen Elizabeth I and so on) are not supposed to represent the actual persons they were in real life, but fictional versions. Still, I agree that the writers have to be careful when using real people from history for the show.

What I love about Moffat is his willingness to experiment. Sure, that inevitably results in the odd stinker (*cough* Hell Bent *cough*) but more often than not it results in some of the most creative and well-executed episodes/plotlines in all 60 years of the show.

Sacha

It really feels like Moffat almost did a experiment in writing this episode where he tried to write himself into a corner with all the narrative threads. He really made everything feel hopeless for everyone involved and even though you know as the viewer that certain individuals WILL pull through… it’s now just the question of how and oh boy it’s a excellent season finale Also your simping for Alex Kingston is such a joy to watch and listen to because my man I feel you soo hard! 😂 She is easily one of the best addition to the cast of New Who

Thomas Midena

In "Forest of the Dead" River said she's seen "whole armies turn and run away" because of the Doctor. Now we know what she saw ;)

The Moffat era is definitely my favourite.

Honestly all the good Davies episodes have Moffat working on them, and the ones that don't are drastically different, don't think it's a coincidence.
