A masterpiece episode, still just as good as the first time I saw it, sometimes I wish the Doctor could only go back in time to get more great historical episodes like this one. What's amazing is how good it is standalone, it hardly has to do with the overarching plot or anything the Doctor has done before. The episode almost acts as a proof of concept for the premise of Doctor Who and its ability to inevitably be good no matter how many times its not. The alien of the episode is a great metaphor for Vincent, a strange wild man who feels like nobody can see him and gets left behind by the village. On paper the episode is simple but its all just executed so well, down to the goofy gizmo the Doctor tries to use to track the monster. Sometimes Doctor Who tries to get a bit too complicated and it loses the substance in favor of premise. I'm surprised Johnny Campbell hasn't been called back to direct another episode after this one. Although you could also attribute the episode success to Steven Moffat, who always knows what he's doing.

The alien is also a great representation of Vincents depression, only he could see it, and it haunted him, hurt him and people around him.
