Thorkell!!

Sarah S

Thorkell joins the cast and is immediately hilarious, insanely powerful, and a total shit-talker. Big himbo energy. I can’t help but stan Thorkell, I fear. Way to connect Sigvaldi with Helga btw, not everyone caught that (including myself lol)

Arifumi Imai was in charge of the cuts of Thorfinn jumping over to Thorkell and the following some cuts of them going at it. An animator whose work you've seen on Shingeki (Levi chase scene 3x2, Levi vs Beast 3x17, etc.) This is the only time he shows up on this series though, as Vinland's production overlapped with Shingeki's third season and he was a core member on the latter.

Thorkell is pure fun packed into an eight foot giant and I am all here for it. Always have a big grin on my face when he's on screen. And yes he's based on a real person called "Thorkell the Tall" who lived around this time period and his association with the Jomsvikings is there as well, but from what I've read his personality doesn't really match the inspiration. I didn't read too much though, so someone who knows more might be able to give better info.

Best girl Thorkell has properly entered the fight!! I’ve always loved that final moment of Thorfinn in this episode. He really is and feels soo alone in this cruel world. But sadly he willingly volunteered for it. After such a hype episode to leave with this tone at the end *chefs kiss*

This isn’t really about translation, but I want to point out a certain thing. Floki. The way he speaks. It is extra formal way of speaking when he's talking to king, talking to Thorkell or even Ragnar. Even though Floki knows Thorkell personally, he speaks as a messenger from the king to a renown lord. He doesn't fall into familiarity. Unlike Thorkell who's basically speaking as he would to a buddy over some beer. This shows just how serious and strict about the rules Floki is. Very disciplined. Likes to do things the "right" way. No wonder he'd be after Thor's head even after a decade because Thor broke the rules. Floki is just that kind of guy. Very proper. Very strict. Chooses and changes his manner of speech depending on who he's talking to, on what subject and mutual social standings of the moment. He spoke in a much simpler way to Askkelad, by the way. As the customer who came to hire some lowlife mercenaries/pirates. To properly translate his speech or king's way of speaking one would have to delve into Shakespearean english, I think. Now that would be a b to even understand lol But basically there's that much difference in how people speak. Royalty and lords speak a certain way, normal lowlife people in much more frank way. Helps distinguish social statuses.

Thorkell the tall is a real historical figure! (But, I wouldn't recommend looking him up due to spoilers). Although heavily 'animified' here haha, he really was thought to be one of the tallest Scandinavians as well as a skilled warrior/tactician. And that's saying something, considering humans were taller during this period of history than they were in the 12th-17th centuries.

I think people are saying that Thorkell is actually has a case of gigantism. I think he might be a bit too large in anime, of course.

Gotcha 👌🏼 definitely good to know. What’s your take on these subtitles ? Some people are saying they aren’t accurate, or taking liberties, but then some people were saying that about the subtitles I was using before as well.

FILMBuFF

Yooo even I know Arifumi by now! No wonder that looked so damn good

石原 悟

All subtitles take some liberties one way or other. I think they're good enough. Not worse than other subtitles. Otherwise I'd be writing essays in comments section each episode lol Unless we take just simple phrases there are no identical translations. Even with simple phrases one can have multiple translations. Especially with Japanese. I just came up with at least 5 different ways to translate "this is a boy" into Japanese in my head. Same meaning, different wording. So I would've translated some parts of the subtitles differently, but that goes for any translator. People will always prefer one version of translation to others. Don't fret over it.

Offtopic Maybe he mentioned throughout different videos, but is there any chance Film buff didn't watch Breaking Bad so he can do it for the channel?

FILMBuFF

Watched it as it was airing 👌🏼 If one of those all timer type shows isn’t on the list, means I’ve already watched it.

aah, i wouldn't have mind doing a rewatch now 10 years later after my initial viewing, along with your reactions/analysis 😂

I hope we get to see Better Call Saul on the channel though! That show has no business being as good as it is
