I can feel the pressure Filmbuff was under to put this out. It's all good. I usually start rambling about translation, but for now I'd like to share my own impression of the lanterns. Erwin and his lantern. That scene when he lights it and asks Nile "Who gets to choose?" The eternal question, eh? Who gets to choose. Who indeed. Karl Fritz made the choice for all Eldians. Reiss family kept making choices for all Eldians on Paradis. Then the Scouts and other military members started making choices. Coup d'etat. Fast forward a bit and we see the next swing of the spiral, Eren made the choice. Fascinating, isn't it? When was the last time we had people making the choices? Oh, wait a second... Marlean people made the choice. The choice to keep hating Eldians and subjugate them. Mmmm, doesn't sound like a nice thing, does it? But what about a handful of individuals making the choices for others? What about Rod Reiss who tried to impose his choice upon Eldians in the walls? Hmmm.... Is it just me, or do both variations seem sketchy?))) So, who gets to choose? Eren? Armin? Hange? The people (who might not even know many details and available options yet, depending on how military dealt with new info)? Military government along with Queen Historia? Historia alone? What do you guys think? I'm actually interested in hearing what different people got to say about this. Who's choices should be held higher? Individual making the choice for the large group? A small group of individuals? Majority of the people? If majority, then how to define it? Would 50.000001% be enough to be considered majority? 60%? 80%? Would you be fine accepting the choice made in accordance with your rules, even if it ends up being something you oppose?

Thank you so much for this.... I see on twitter that you have already seen episode 10. What will be the upload time for next 3 episodes? Will it be weekly or earlier than usual?

The king choosing for his people to die and perish when the time comes is wrong. Whats only right is all people should have a right to fight for survival, and to do that is never wrong. I dont know what eren is deviding for eldia, yet in similar way ita just as wrong for him to choose for eldia just like the king did. Yet at the same time, if its to free them it seems less wrong then if its to make forget, and sign to definete doom.

Great discussion. I would like first to point out something about the previous episode. In the end of the episode, you can see Connie looking at Eren (before Eren start asking Connie what was Sasha;'s last words), which gives a feeling that Connie was waiting for Eren to say something, maybe regret what he did. However, not of these happened. What this episode showed us about Niccolo is kind of similar to what episode 10 of S3 showed about a miracle as Uri described it, but Kenny replied by saying that this happened because you showed me your power first and crushed me in your hand. Similarly, Niccolo was able to be a friend to some people who used to be his enemies. In this episode, we see Armin who wanted to believe in this miracle just like Uri.

Did someone tell him about the thing in Episode 10 that is related to Mikasa?

Filmbuff, great discussion as always! I was really intrigued by your lantern motif discussion, such an ordinary utilitarian tool, yet it holds such interesting symbolism in the course of the story. If you remember, in season 3 episode 11, they show briefly how they used the glowing ore in the underground chapel (Reiss) to make lanterns, signifying the light of knowledge that was revealed from the underground cave to the rest of the population due to coup d'état. Very interesting, I wonder what other objects add to the nuance of the story....

Maaaaan I hear so many times that Isayama is inspired by some themes and characters from GOT in his writing, especially for some of the content we’ve seen up to this point in S4 which is when I think he started binging it. Because of that, I really want to watch GOT and feel like I’d really vibe with it but I hear it doesn’t stick the landing, so I’m really torn about starting an 8 season investment knowing that it might fall apart some by the end. Anyways great discussion. I really like the additions to the cast from this episode, especially Niccolo and Onyankonpan. Isayama actually made some comments about what the conch could mean (I think! Memory might be a little iffy 🤡) shortly after he wrote the chapter where it first appeared. I’m not sure if author comments are spoiler-y? But it could be worth looking into if you’re interested or if our trusty mod thinks it’s a good idea.

Please, don't watch them lmao, the books are great ! But GOT's ending is just not it. But if you want to discover some very well written characters and an amazing story I would recommend Black Sails !

i reallllllllllly wanna know who film buffs favorite character is

Muhd Zulhilmi

The shooting range scene with the exchange between Eren and Armin kinda remind me of what Nick Fury said in Winter Soldier. "I take the world as it is, not what it should be" Eren is aware and acknowledge who they are and what the world thinks of them. I especially like that he doesn't deny that they are monsters cos technically they are. But because of that he knows what needs to be done to protect his people even if that means doing some unforgivable things. Armin on the other hand, has a vision of what the world should be. One of understanding and sympathy. You can say it's naive but I just cannot fault not wanting to kill people. Unfortunately, in their world, diplomacy is a mountain to climb for the Eldians. And to make matters worse, time which they do not have, forces them to choose a path.

The secret way Zeke wipes his ass is the key to everything.

Serodin

I have my theories about his method, which largely involve trees and being upside down. Good thing his hotel offers this.

Here's my take on the significance of the conch shell. The Tybur family logo is also a conch, and at the end of one of the episodes or something, Wit studios had released a tribute image, if I can remember correctly, that said Thanks AT. I think they meant Thanks Armin Tybur. Crazy innit😮. Plus the blonde hair!

Anonymous

Thanks AT is the name of the song that plays during the last scene of season 3, probably stands for Thanks Attack Titan.

How this man just knows all episodes and their scenes off the top of his head. Not even all of you are as good lmao

Anonymous

just speculation but based on how emotional he gets I would say right now it is Reiner but before it used to be Ymir but she unfortunately passed away I suppose she is at number 2 maybe

Anonymous

I really wanna see FilmBuff's reaction to Fate/Zero. Really hope he decides to watch it in the future

Anonymous

This man’s memory is built different, I swear lol I can remember what happened but no way I can tell which episode was it. Only a few very remarkable scenes.

Anonymous

Thats a good one, start with Fate Zero??? That one makes a good impression.

Anonymous

The next episode is gonna be fire, I wonder what he can deduce just from it.

Anonymous

Does anyone know if Im has any plans to watch Monster in the future?

Anonymous

Good to see papa Braus getting some love. He usually doesn't get much notice from people.

Anonymous

Yeah, he has it on the list of potential anime he wants to watch
