Let's go! I'll have to watch this in parts lol. Btw I hope you read the chapters for the episodes you cover after you're done watching them. I know people love MAPPA, but I've noticed them rushing the pacing of many moments including Reiner and Eren's confrontation in the basement, as well as some odd changes to little things like people's facial expressions that amount to what I feel are big departures from their manga characterization (Eren's reactions to Willy's speech are a big example of this). Maybe Sephizen can link you the chapters that are good for you to read? At any rate, Isayama's original work in this arc is maybe the best in the series, so I strongly encourage you to read his chapters after each episode to get the fullest experience!

Regarding Tybur‘s lie about Eren being able to use the founding titan: It‘s possible that he actually thinks this way and is not actively lying because Reiner told them after he came back. Reiner has no idea about that royal blood rule, all he saw was Eren randomly being able to use it so he probably reported it like that.

What a rare occasion. I actually disagree with one interpretation. To me, Uri was talking about the "humanity" inside the walls. At any time "humanity" was mentioned back then in conversation between Eldians on Paradis, it always referred just to them. Since no one knew about the outside world, but still. There's no reason for Uri talking about creating paradise inside the walls to Kenny to suddenly talk about humanity as a whole. Besides, if I remember correctly, he said "in the not too distant future, this world will crumble". This world. Not the world. There was another time when the distinction was made, by Reiner actually. Season 2 episode 6. On the walls. As I recall the translation went like "our goal was to ensure the humanity was exterminated" or something. But Reiner said something slightly different. He said "our goal was to ensure this humanity was exterminated". He made the distinction. I remember this clearly because I have pointed it out a couple times over the years. So it's been a trend in AoT that when important characters say "this world" or "this humanity" it's for a reason. Karl Fritz definitely believed that the retribution by Marley will come eventually. Anyone would've believed that, knowing the history at the time. No way Marley would ignore the ex-oppressors/rulers for eternity. It's only natural to want a revenge. And it's also a human nature to hate what you fear. A whole race which can transform into human eating giants? All it takes is some serum, or maybe even just a shout from Founder? I mean, they had to be transforming all the centuries ago, without enough scientific knowledge to create serums. And wall titans are too same. The size. Founding must have been able to do quite a lot to Eldians, if it can even erase everyone's memories at once. So no way humans will be able to live in peace knowing that Eldians exist. It simply ain't human nature. Especially not when history proves that Eldians can be vicious and brutal just like humans. Apart from titanism they are humans with all the faults, after all. So I always took that Uri scene as talking just about the "world" inside the walls, the "humanity" inside the walls.

Oh no... I forgot Im was going to talk about translation... Well, here we go. Gotta give some insight. First of all, the fan subs are quite literal and also definitive. Definitive because they take one literal meaning and run with it. The problem is, quite a few words in our language have meanings that can't be translated in one word, yet subs demand cutting down on word number per scene. Because humans can only read so much at a time. And some interpretations are included, even hinted at through wording. For example, going all the way back to Eren Kruger saying "anyone can be a god or a devil. all it takes is for someone to believe it". Literal translation actually is "anyone can be a god or a devil. all it takes is for someone to state it so". Here the "believe" part is implied. Kruger is talking about the trigger. You gotta say it to make it a widespread truth. Of course the people gotta believe what you say, but that's a given, not worth mentioning. Which is exactly what Lord Tybur did. He said it. Doesn't matter if he himself believed in it. He said that Eren was a true devil so to speak. Same with Grisha. Without him saying out loud that Eldian Empire consisted of saints who did nothing but help people, Restorationists would've been within realms of official propaganda. Now on to examples Im looked at. The demolition part. Was it due to age taking its toll, or did it decay? The answer is both. The word used is 老朽化. Deterioration/decay due to passing of time. Magath is saying that the house grew old and decayed. Rats and pillars are kinda same problem, but rats are a special case. Both words can be plural or singular. We don't add "s" to words to make them plural, by default most nouns can mean both. A good rule of thumb is to assume multiple unless the context clearly shows that it's singular, or it's otherwise specified. In the context of conversation between Magath and Lord Tybur pillar/s can mean both. So it's more natural to assume there are more than one pillars. To get dramatic impact though, you can state it was just one pillar and argue that it' technically correct, since the word pillar/s holds both meaning. To which I would say that in such cases it's specified already for the same dramatic effect, and that translator is getting too hyped about his/her own interpretation. Rat/s too, hold both multiple and singular meaning, but here's a slight nuance. The phrase "we got rat/s" said metaphorically always refers to enemy spies. That's just how we speak. Just like in English one might say "he's a rat" and mean that the person in question is a snitch. Rat/s mean spies in our language. So Magath could be referring to one, but again, unless specified it's better to assume multiple. Multiple enemy spies sniffing around. Oh, and the house was not "infested", he said "we already got rat/s who gotten inside", inside the house. Oriental is the correct translation. Where did the east come in? Well, the word "oriental is 東洋, literally "east (of, eastern part) ocean". Or perhaps, the translators knew Kiyomi's family name and translated it. Azumabito, 東人, literally "people/person (of) east". So that could be a thing. By the way, in manga it's written as アズマビト, without the characters which are the ones having meaning, but we all know how it would be written. Especially with country's name being Hizuru, a slight variation of the old name for Japan. Hi-izuru, 日出, the "sun come out" country. So to summarize, translation differences come from amount translated and how literal and pushy translator wants to be. Oh, and there's also the annoying characteristic of the language. The one where we constantly omit the subject. Sometimes people get confused what's the subject. For example, pretty much all phrases translated as "he/she/they/specific person came" are actually just "came" when we say it. Not saying everything, keeping things obscure, needing to read between the lines, all that is how we constantly communicate. It's made possible through sharing same cultural expectations and knowledge of typical moments. We just know that with certain wording the subject must be this, or that. With a certain word choice and choice of the degree of politeness (we have three distinct forms of polite speech, standard semi-polite speech, speech to an equal, and rude speech) the subject and nuances are obvious. To us. To a non-native? Not sure. Well, I think I'll stop around here)) Maybe add something later, probably not though. There's too much I could say on the topic of translation.

I was just about to say the same thing...given Karl Fritz's ideology, he was referring to the humanity within the walls crumbling in the distant future. I interpreted his actions as him subjecting the Subjects of Ymir to a death sentence, with the three walls acting as prison gates. He wished to enjoy a brief moment of peace with his fellow inmates for the brutality of the Eldian empire, until their time would come, when Marley (or other countries), their executioner, would arrive to pass judgment on them and execute them for their sins (or rather, the sins of their ancestors). Hence, he said, if Marley (or possibly any other nation) wishes to gain the power of the Founding Titan, they would simply relinquish it as part of their punishment. Maybe he thought the other races could probably use it better (not the case as Marley is doing the same as what the Eldian empire did!), or maybe Karl just wanted to absolve the Subjects of Ymir of the sins of their ancestors.

A comprehensive, insightful discussion - well worth the additional wait! I thought this was one of, if not the best directed episodes of the series, even if there are more exciting or revealing episodes. You are dead-on about this being as much of a pivot of the story as That Day has been. While MAPPA did a fantastic job in adapting it, credit goes to Isayama for balancing and connecting the meeting between the two rivals/kindred spirits and the play with finesse, all while simultaneously moving multiple pieces across the board. It is certainly, as you have mentioned, a Light of the Seven moment. Have I mentioned that hearing ət'æk 0N Tάɪtn (the episode 1 soundtrack you spoke of) as Eren’s leg regrows is like hearing the Rains of Castemere during the Red Wedding? The episode is chock full of stunning imagery, as you mentioned. You discussed the extending of hands between Eren and Reiner, a recurring motif that extends all the way back to S1E3/S2E6 that culminates in Eren’s acceptance of Reiner as an equal here. I thought the transitions and especially the framing of the different scenes were a highlight, in particular. Take for example, Falco’s body in each shot being framed between Reiner and Eren – well-poised as a middleman between the two who is being exposed to both worlds. Another one would be that whenever Willy Tybur tells a half-truth/fabricates history, we are shown an act in the background (e.g. the Eldians, Eren being a devil); but when he is being honest, we are shown a scene of the truth (e.g. the wall breaking, Uri) or a shot of Willy himself being open with his emotions. Fascinating stuff.

Another thing I wanted to mention to you Im: I really love that you have such an appreciation for Season 3 Part 1's ending (the one that features Historia). It's probably my favorite ED for the whole series and it's criminally underrated IMO. Little Historia is so cute and the way they tell her story and how it ties into other stories is just gorgeous. The song is called "Akatsuki no Requiem" and if you care to check out the lyrics (no spoilers that aren't already covered in S3P2), it talks about the separation of great nations, the cycle of violence and repetition of history in broad terms. Really great foreshadowing.

"Keep moving forward'' is such a suiting theme for shingeki. Since 'shingeki'' means ''advancing'' or ''attaking while advancing'' in japanese. So every time the owner of ''shingeki no kyojin'', eren jaeger says that its a holy shit he said it moment for japanese audience.

I’m still only halfway through OMG An extra knife twist during the basement convo is the insane irony of Falco telling Eren “I trusted you... and you tricked me!” while Eren sits across from Reiner, which is exactly what Reiner did to Eren all those years ago 😭 THUS making Reiner re-live that pain he inflicted on Eren but through poor Falco, exacerbating Reiner’s guilt. Arguably - what is happening to Falco now is a series of events originally stemming from Reiner’s attack on Paradis and eventual betrayal

My favorite thing about the series is how the different reveals all change the way the story can be taken. For example, Reiner's reveal in season 2 changed the way I even saw season 1 and it just carried on from there.
