Here we go :D

This was the one episode in S3p2 in which I felt WIT missed the mark. Fortunately, it's not all bad (the sequence with Hange taking stock of the situation and going over the King's War Renunciation Vow set to the Royal Blood OST is a season standout), the title drop has grown on me, and the season finale that follows is 10/10, but WIT really rushed Kruger's dialogue here and as a big fan of the character, that hurt a lot to see when the episode first aired. Kruger doesn't deny any of the atrocities committed by his people's Imper*alist Empire when they col*nized the world. He does not fully deny claims that Eldians gen*cided Marleyans. He doesn't even claim to fully understand the nature of their God Ymir (btw, Merry Fritzmas everyone!) He simply wants to save his people from those that would see them destroyed for having committed all of this past oppression, and to that end, he becomes the kind of specter to which Floch alluded when he was making a case for reviving Erwin. Perhaps the thing for which I love Kruger the most is his assertion that a King who cannot protect his people is no King and that power must be wielded to defend one's people. I have some friends from college here whose families first arrived to this nation on the Mayflower, and while I can understand feeling frought over this nation's history as you might over any nation's history, the fervor with which these friends of mine (all incredibly wealthy and cushy now, mind you) rushed to disavow their own ancestors and fellow countrymen confounded me. I guess what I'm saying is that Kruger... had a hard life 😂 So overall, this episode is not a terrible one by any stretch, but in rushing Kruger's moments, it definitely ends up being a miss that falls short of what it could have been. Next week though... you're in for one of the best episodes in the entire series :)

Sure anime adaptions can‘t include every line of dialogue and sometimes it shows. But I would never even consider saying that this episode missed the mark..

Kruger probably isn't one of your favorite characters in the manga, then. To each his own.

Always great seeing the sudden change in people's faces when they see the end of this episode. I'm also glad you ended up skipping the title after all. From my experience of seeing any above average reactor, they just go "is that the name of Eren's titan?!" right after they see the title at the beginning. Then when Kruger's preparing to do the series title drop by explaining the essence of the titan, the same people already know he's about to say Attack Titan and they basically say it again before he does, which removes the one-two punch of getting both Eren's titan name and the series title drop as a surprise at the same time. If there's ever more things like this in the future I'll definitely give a heads up too.

I didn’t say that, I just think they did the best they could and it didn’t leave me feeling unsatisfied

By the way i suggest watching the op and ending to s4 with english subtitles if you can.

Good looking out Sephizen. I'm curating my best friends' marathon of the series in the same way (the Reiner-Bert reveal caught them both off-guard because I hyped up Ymir's reveal by showing them the Ilse's Notebook OVA right before "Soldier" and "Historia", the episodes in which the new language on the food cans is revealed and in which Ymir first transforms). S3p2 in particular had a lot of spoilery things about it, from the serumbowl tease at the end of uprising to the entire opening for part 2 revealing so many crucial moments from the battle, so it's good you're leaving mindful tips like this.

Just in case you need the clarification, "Shingeki no Kyojin" translates to "Advancing Giant(s)". So at first you would think the title of the show is due to the advancing giants at the start of s1. But since japanese is so cool that there is no plural form for nouns the way english does, it also means "The Advancing Giant" which is Eren's titan's name. Isayama is brilliant and epic reaction as always =)

Absolutely incredible. My favorite episode of the series, great reaction!

I wouldn't think too much about the Historia getting memories from the letter thing. In the manga, Ymir's backstory hadn't been told to us yet and it was told to us here, through the letter that Historia was reading, but since they already gave us her backstory in season 2, this was just the anime's way of giving Historia that knowledge without having to go through it again for the audience. It's kinda clumsy and doesn't really make sense in the lore, imo but it wasn't part of the original manga.
