I’ve never been close to tears reading books or comics and such. So it’s really incredible how teary eyed I got reading this part of the manga. Isayama wrote a beautiful speech and has the ability to draw some magnificent panels along with it. It’s the only time I cried from reading. Then WIT came and masterfully animated it, with Sawano’s genius in the background and Ono Daisuke’s flawless performance. This was perfection.

Just a note that they actually drew Eren a bit too small in the shot where he’s ramming Berholdt’s leg. Eren’s titan is 15m tall and Bertholdt’s is 60m, so he should come about to about his knee, not just his ankle

One of the most amazing episodes I've ever seen, I also recommend checking out the dub for this episode. The English voice actor for Erwin gave an amazing performance.

All I have to do to get choked up on demand even now is watch Erwin do the "I'm so physically and mentally tired" type of sigh, sit on that crate and have that piano start playing. You're right about the build up being amazing too. Levi basically starts monologuing how screwed they are and what they should do to retreat kind of like he's acting as interim commander while Erwin stands there almost in a trance realizing his life goal might not happen because of the last resort he has in mind. While that's going on, Erwin looks to the side and sees the recruits losing hope and a softer version of 2an plays in the background only to end right when Erwin finally brings Levi along on a journey inside his head and thought process, which allows Levi to make the choice for him. I'll miss Erwin's voice actor Daisuke Ono going forward, 11/10 line delivery throughout (and that includes the few heart breaking ones left during Midnight Sun, where's the fast forward 2 weeks button so I can watch these Hero and Midnight Sun reactions damnit).

Seconding this! AOT Dub is kind of a mixed bag but Erwin & Levi have great actors and J Michael Tatum slays that scene

This one is an absolute classic, no doubt about it. The chapter that was adapted in the latter half still sits in my top 5 after all this time. The voice acting from Ono Daisuke is incredible and carried that scene at the end so freaking much. I'm also really glad that you understood why this was such a perfect ending for Erwin, in his last moments finally fighting for humanity without his dream torturing him at the back of his mind. This just makes me hopeful, that you really felt why Levi does what he does in Midnight Sun.

You could say that Erwins act is in a way a form of redemption, even though on the outside it looks like theres nothing he needs to redeem himself for. But to give up his dream is the ultimate selfess sacrifice, and its quite fitting that the man who appeared to be selfless achieved success in reality out of selfishness, did the actual selfless thing. His mask became his reality to honour his fallen comrades

One of the best and most heartbreaking episodes. All that emotion that has been building up through the writing with the character of Erwin as come to fruition and i could tell by your emotions that i didn't miss. It's only gonna get better.
