Can the gods cure the sickness? (Assuming they care enough to try) Or is it functionally impossible for them to fix it because their powers are the source of the problem, and anything they try would have to use those same powers?

really good question! for this lore post i may leave it up in the air so anyone who puts it in their games can make the call, but i personally would probably have it so that you can only cure it fully by Killing the god, it may gradually go away on its own if you cut off contact with them and youre not at a late stage of 'infection', and maybe a third kind of roundabout pacifist way involving Quests and Riddles dependent on the god

Man imagine a god of death who is genuinely kind and caring, but has to isolate themselves from their followers and the rest of the world because their very presence causes people to become frail and weak, eventually passing away or turning a few who don’t into either undead or powerful necromancers.

Wow, I am LOVING these! We recently made an Oath of Divinity for my Paladin, and one of the features says her body is adapting in order to be able to handle how much power is running through her, so I might ask our DM if I can incorporate some of these! Juuust to make her a little more off-putting than she currently is >:3
