Mahito's VA is going crazy this season. You'll love his performance.

They mentioned it in season 1, but cursed spirits can regenerate so long as they still have cursed energy left, so you can't really cripple them, you just keep wounding them until they run out of power. Mahito is particularly troublesome as his powers revolve around manipulating the soul (his and others) so only attacks that affect the soul will really do any damage against him. Mechamaru knew this so prepared weapons for that exact purpose, he just underestimated the extend of Mahito's ability to shape change.
