That dream sequence where Bruce cries when that horde of homeless are around him begging for money. Really illustrates his character, he wishes he could do more for Gotham. And clearly he doesn't feel he does enough, despite fighting crime pretty much every night and giving quite generously as a philanthropist. As well as providing jobs through Wayne Enterprises. I think it's a part of the character that nowadays people tend to belittle and under-appreciate. When they say shit like "Bruce Wayne could do better by donating his fortune, to the poor, rather than dressing up as a bat and fighting the mentally ill." They forget that Bruce does a lot for Gotham, besides keeping the cities safe from crime.
