So Kotetsushin Jeeg is a sequel to the 70's Kotetsu Jeeg, with the flashback in the episode showing an alternate outcome between the original Jeeg and the villain of the series, Himika

The creator of Jeeg, Go Nagai, also was the creator of Mazinger/Great Mazinger/Mazinkaiser, and also co.creator to Getter Robo. So that same mysterious, gothic, monstrous feel to it. Jeeg's gimmick was that it's entire body is completely separate from each part. It used this to swap out body parts for various tools/weapons to fit the situation. Mazinger's thing was durability, Getter's thing was multiple forms, Jeegs ability is part swap.
