I remember this scene airing and it had people absolutely infatuated with Gildarts. I also remember a theory sprouting about Gildarts being the Edolas version of igneel who was sent to earth as a baby somehow just because of his red hair and closeness with Natsu, Does it make much sense? No. Is it a cool theory? I think so

It was never about beating Gildarts, but Natsu knowing when to back off and understand his limits as well as that feeling fear is not an inherent flaw; in fact adhereing to fear within reason is a sign of wisdom. Same thing happened with Juvia to an extent, she was being too predictable with Erza, who was expressing disappointment at her. It was as if Juvia was not really trying, nevermind that she and Lisanna had no coordination with their attacks. This arc has many excellent moments and Gildarts v Natsu is one of many to come.

This is one of my favorite episodes in the whole show, Natsu's "never back down" attitude has served him well but its important to know when to turn tail and run when you're faced with impossible odds. I'd also like to point out, and think i'd be even okay with saying this much, this is the only point in the entire show where Natsu has fully admitted defeat, THATS just how much power Gildarts has. It also gives you an idea, if Gildarts display of power alone was enough to make the main character admit defeat with barely a struggle, just how powerful is the dragon that took two of his limbs and left him near death in the blink of an eye?
