What's funny is that the director initially wanted Jack to be a cool and serious character but Depp wanted to go with his current goofy personality and they went with it. Best decision that they ever made as Jack carries the series.

That thing you read a corsets is very common misinformation. Corsets are actually pretty comfortable they provide back support and help to evenly distribute the weight of the clothes. Working women wore them for centuries. There is a practice called tight lacing that does damage the body but not many people did it.

Pirate codes actually were a real thing, but they were on a ship by ship basis, not like one overarching code for all pirates. They were kind of like a contract that all the crew members would sign before departing that included payment, rules for crew (and punishments for breaking them), compensation for injury, etc.
