I'd say this episode definitely shows how Canute is going down the dark path of blood. Willing to sacrifice anything or anyone for the sake of his grand goal of ruling over a Kingdom. Kind of reminds me of another feminine-looking douche from Berserk.

The anime also skipped this little tidbit. Shortly before being crowned the King of England, Canute had the Earl of Edric put to death. Makes sense on his part. After all, if he were willing to betray King Ethelred; then he certainly would've turned on Canute the first chance he got.

I just love how competent they are showing Canute to be. He is concerned with winning and holding what he has. Whatever has to happen to reach his goals, is what will happen. It makes the weak and frail Canute into this terrifying, monstrous, but effective leader.
