That was a good reaction. Now it gives you an idea of who Ryoma, Hayato, Benkei and Saotome are. And yeah, as can see, Ryoma has always been one edgy bastard. It's just Armageddon universe Ryoma had the nicer sides to him beaten out due to that time in prison after Hayato framed him. Yeah he does actually have nicer sides. The video didn't show that too well I found tbh. He has an eye for an eye mentality, but is not too keen on harming people who he feels haven't done anything wrong, especially to him. Like he was hesitant to burn alive Saotomes mind controlled son, something Saotome had to do (Yeah he's not a nice old guy at all). Then there's the time he refused to fight when he seen humans in experiment tubes captured by the dinosaur empire. And the last is when he learns that the government purposefully developed a bioweapon from a virus they found in space. He couldn't comprehend humans using such inhuman measures. That last part seems naive, but I chalk it up to him not being in school much due to his late fathers spartan style training, so he's probably to to aware of WW1 and 2 and such.

Also, there's one thing about the video, and this is something most mecha fans don't know. Getter actually didn't invent combining mecha. That was Dai-Machine which is so obscure, coming across a physical copy or even scans on the internet is almost impossible. Again, can't blame em due to being so hard to find. It's the first animated combiner as well as the first hotblooded combiner. What I mean by hotblooded is that prior to Mazinger Z, series by Yokayama like Tetsujijn, the grandfather of mecha, Dai Machine and such had their characters be more wholesome and just. I mean I don't think they were wimps or such, sure Tetsujin's lead was a badass car driving, gun toting kid. But They still had that Disney feel to em in look and expression. Not to mention most were just kids. Nagai and Ishikawa as can see brought elements that suited older kids and teens, particularly featuring teenage pilots. The pilots fought with a lot of passion and enjoyment of battle and were very over the top. There was the sex, gore, and more gray areas, thanks to Nagai's influenced (He actually pissed off the Japanese PTA with his manga). Also Getter was the first multiform mecha something that only a handful of mecha have attempted in future. I think only about 5 or 6 maybe have done the concept. The most recent being Garandoll back in 2021. Also it's the first arguably liquid metal combiner compared to the more snap together mecha like Dai-Machine,prior or later combiners like Combattler V, Voltron, Power Rangers or GaoGaiGar.

You even more can see where Gurren Lagann and Kill La Kill got it's style and themes from. Just pure nutty characters and energy to it.There's a reason it;s so iconic and legendary among mecha and why it's among my favorite, if not my my favorite mecha, as you can see why I talk a lot about it. When I read the manga, I was shocked to find just how violent and how Ryoma and Hayato were such psycho's.Plus you can see how Hayato influenced Lelouch in ways, a clever, psychotic bastard who finally has something worthwhile to direct his genius towards. And yeah, from the 90's onward is where Getter really evolved, literally and thematically. It's why You can see that in Armageddon's storytelling. When read the later parts, it's what cemented Getter as legendary to me, even despite it being unfinished due to Ishikawa's death, that's just telling of how amazing it is. Each arc just get's better and better and builds on what happened previously.

I do agree with you on the idea of less is more at times when writers try to overcomplicate things. One of the post Ishikawa spinoffs tried to so hard to act serious, from and dramatic. The turned Ryoma into a sad,, emo little shit in a vein of Shinji of Evangelion. Getter does have complexity and conundrums, but it it was always met with characters who do so with a shit eating grin and little moping. Devolution Ryoma sits the back of the class all apathetic and 'Oh my life is shit. His first fight is with a snobby classmate. Yeah how exciting.
