Rumiko loves making big tangled webs of characters with huge character flaws. All of her series kind of have big central love triangles, some are a bit more balanced then others, it's a fun trope. In the manga Ranma actually tries to leave Ryoga and Akane alone on their date after he pretends to be Ryoga's fiance, it's Akane's dad who forces him to intervene again, it's a weird change for the anime to make.

yeah the japanese dubbed opening is great lol. do check out the ending in your own time, its called lambada ranma and has all the japanese voice actors singing about their characters. its really cool that so much of the music features the voice actors, like akanes baka song which always cracks me up.
