One thing I think Gintama does better than any other shounen is build the humanity behind it's villains. Almost none of them are evil for the sake of being evil. They are human, and have very human motivations. And because of this, their deaths are sad and relatable. Sometimes their death is necessary and they died as a villain, like in the case of Hosen or Jiraiya. Sometimes they redeem themselves and their died for something greater, like Isaburo or these guys. But regardless of whether they redeem themselves or not, they still feel human. Their struggles and mistakes are relatable. More relatable than heroes... Or so I would say, if Gintama's heroes weren't just as incredibly written...
