to kinda give a bit more context behind hijikata and shinpachi's conversation, shinpachi and the rest of the world thought hijikata was killed in the Hakodate war (which was actually a real war which the real hijikata fought in back in the late 1800s) but he was secretly imprisoned for the vast majority of his life which is why when shinpachi discovered he was alive he was extremely pissed at the warden for not telling him given their history in the shinsengumi

also i love how random the humor in this series is. just the random guy walking in and then tsurumi shoving him aside is just the funniest and random thing i can't help but laugh every time i see that scene
