Even after all this time, Ace still has a prevalent role in the entire story. Ace really helped set up the bonds between Luffy and Yamato before they ever met. Also, his death allowed Sabo to remember his memories to reunite with Luffy and get his Flame Flame fruit. Garp was correct that Ace would see how much meaningful his life was because even after death, he's still never forgotten. That's why I love that scene between kid Ace and Garp. Something important should know since it's mentioned more in the manga; After Ace visited Onigashima, Kaido wanted to meet Ace for a long time. During Marineford, Kaido and King were on the way to join the battlefield, BUT Shanks stopped both of them from coming. It was mentioned briefly in an older episode by some Marines that Shanks stopped Kaido. We, to this day, don't know how Shanks stopped Kaido from coming to Marineford. But it's interesting to think that had Kaido and King shown up, would they rescue Ace or try to kill him and everyone else? And more importantly, Shanks to have involvement in every little aspect in the background, which adds more mystery to his character as well.

I ponder if he thought Ace could be the one to kill him since he does want to die. Hell there were a lot of powerful people at Marineford.
