The Bechdel Test Rick mentions is a real test, devised by Alison Bechdel to ascertain if a movie depicts women as equals to men, rather than as an accessory or in stereotypical ways. To pass the test, a movie needs to have at least two named female characters engaging in conversation, and talking about something other than men lol

The Bechdel Test is far from perfect though, cause there are blatantly women-hating movies who pass it and quite a few types of movies who have barely any natural way to pass it.

that's because it was originally meant to be a joke. it was originally featured as part of a satirical comic series called "dykes to watch out for" and was meant to poke fun at people with the kind of mindset "i only watch movies/series if x..." and show the obvious flaws with that kind of thinking. unfortunately, like it is so often the case, the internet doesn't understand satire and thought it was a real thing -not helped by a certain popular con artist at the time who used it as a measuring stick in one of her videos-, so now we have people who actual judge things based on it.

Yeah, I also read something similar that the cartoonist Alison Bechdel made it as a joke, but I'm not sure it was entirely the internet's fault as they've been using it in women's studies apparently since 1985 when she made it lol Though I'm not surprised at all that the internet made it so it's now considered a standard for feminazi critics 😂 Poor woman was just trying to be funny
