The thing I like about Hermit's backstory is that his mother's guilt is left up in the air. The last we see her she is desperately claiming innocence, Hermit just chose not to believe her.

I'm conflicted on this episode. Clearly they went all out with the animation. It has a better quality than most of the other episodes. But i'm not a fan of the flashes of light, making it look like kenichi had DBZ powers when he did the double palm. I like this story very much because it was grounded in realism at first and doesnt devolve into flying around and energy blasts (ignoring the 30 ft vertical leaps and being kicked into orbit by apachai, obviously, lol)

I can't remember exactly how they put it, but I believe the masters are kind of at the point of "I'll only step in to save the girl if it becomes clear that Kenichi is incapable of doing it himself." I do agree, they're all major badasses, and it would be awesome to watch them kick the shit outta these clowns, but Kenichi would never learn anything if his masters did everything for him, possibly especially in dire situations like these.
