I really enjoyed the setup of this story! I like the visuals and the mecha, but who - or what - the hell is this kid?!

The series has a lot of strategy, foreshadowing and logic to it. Such things like Gai checking energy levels, explanation as to how enemy and ally tech works, those stat screens, fusion/final fusion probability etc. There's little rush in with no plan. Heck, GaoGaiGar (GGG for short) casts the tornado to ensure Final Fusion works unimpeded, a criticism you find of a lot of mid battle transformation get and why enemies don't attack. Hell and Heaven prevents escape by same tornado and protect shade gives defense in battle. Also, Gai socks EI-02 the minute is in striking range after regenerates.

And theme and character wise, the series is huge on heroism, courage, bravery and self sacrifice. Despite being strategic, Gai would readily throw his life away to save people, a trait he and 3G shares in spades. It's what makes him a favorite of mine as he's so dedicated to those ideals. But Gai isn't a moron, in fact he's well educated. Also he's voiced by Hiei of Yu Yu Hakusho and Viral of Gurren Lagann.
