The parasites are certainly stronger than humans on an individual level, but their main advantage is that most people don't know they exist. Their human parts are vulnerable so guns would work fine on them. Reiko is smart enough to know humanity could win if it ever came to open conflict. Odd that the other parasites don't seem to learn about the world as much as her and Migi, considering how quickly they are capable of absorbing information.

My take was always that the difference is how heavily they are controlled by their instincts. Migi is kinda forced to break with his instincts, while Reiko is an exceptional individual who has managed to break away from hers.
