Wohoo kenichi . Honestly the cast is so great, I actually grew to really like pretty much every character we meet in the series besides one lol

This show aired from 2006-2007, which is considered by many to have had the single best release lineup of any year in all of anime. So much like Kenichi the character, Kenichi the show tends to be a bit overlooked. It's great to see Kenichi getting some love.

What you said there at the end hits the nail on the head for why this is my favorite anime of all time. It's a typical underdog story of a typical high schooler doing typical martial arts. There's no Nen Powers, there's no Kamehameha, there's no Devil Fruit. It's just good old fashioned ass kicking. I'm not gonna act like it's a better show than Hunter X Hunter, because it's not, I fully acknowledge that it's objectively worse than that show is. But the lower stakes, the more grounded in reality storytelling, the easier to relate to characters, it just leads to me liking this so much more even though I know that it's not actually better from a critical point of view.

Rewatching this has made me realize Cobra Kai is basically just live action Kenichi.
