Okay a lot to cover this episode, Lancer real name Diarmuid was a knight of the Fianna a band of Irish warriors that have a lot in common with the British Knights of the Round Table. Their king was a man whose name is often Anglicized to Finn McCool. Diarmuid was one of the Fianna's greatest warriors, but he was cursed with a love-spot. In the original legends it's more like a Hindu bindi, while here it's being portrayed as mole under his eye. This love-spot made women fall in love with him. Which is what happened with Grianne (Grace in English), Finn McCool's Queen. In the original story she's a seductress that uses sorcery to make Diarmuid run away with her. Like many things in Fate, the story goes differently than the legends. In this case Grianne is portrayed as an innocent who falls in love with a handsome knight and runs away with him. Like you said Kayneth would rather be dead than unable to use magic. Remember when he was introduced he made a huge deal about his family's long history practicing magic. When compared to the short amount of time Waver's family has been practicing. A man who has that much disdain for newcomers to the study of magic, no doubt thinks even less of those who can't even use it. It'd be like living without his pride. Also Waver very much buys into the bullshit Kayneth sold him. And underestimates his own potential and talents. So it was nice to see Rider encouraging him. After all the only other people who know where Caster is. Are Kirei and Tosaka, and both of them are incredibly powerful mages.
