While it's obvious that Shinji and his dad have issues, it's also apparent that Shinji can pilot some serious ass-kickings!

Shinji dad: Get in the fucking robot Shinji Shinji: no fuck you, act like a real dad

J Johnson

This anime was basically the kids version of psychedelic drugs when growing up. Goes from seemly typical mecha anime to "WTF is going!?" on by the end. Then the movie came out and decided to double down on the craziness. One of my first anime, and definitely not one I'll ever forget.

For future reference: Don’t watch this series on Netflix, it’s a censored version and they made lots of PC changes than the original version.

The best way to describe Evangelion is: Ultraman+Ideon+Kamen Rider+Getter Robo+Devilman+Mazinger+Zambot 3+Gundam+Dunbine+Jushin Liger.

Saying that I love NGE is a stretch, I'm not even sure about that. It can be summed up by a Twitter thread I've seen once. It went something like this. "Is Evangelion a good anime?" "You should watch it." "It's a classic." "It's one of the most influential shows in anime history." "Take note that none of these answers were yes." I agree with all answers. Let's leave it at that for now. As I mentioned before in messages, there's a lot of interesting background information about this show. There's also a lot of plot that was left out due to budget problems. Some of it is mentioned in passing and might be confusing. Some of it was only addressed in subsequent video games and interviews. I had to do a research to understand what's going on and I'll do my best to explain these things, as long as it doesn't spoil anything. I encourage any Goosher with more extensive lore and meta knowledge to add anything or correct me. When NGE was released, manga and anime industry was suffering from long stagnation. Most people in charge were unwilling to do anything risky and kept releasing products that regurgitated the same tropes. Otakus were lapping it up with all the power of their escapism, while it was harder and harder to attract normal fans. People who made NGE wanted to change that and prove that more serious products can sell. They succeded in that, industry started accepting artists and writers with more engaging material to its ultimate benefit. NGE was also meant as a wake-up call for obsessive weebs. Every prominent character has mental problems and unhealthy way to cope with them, both leading to further deterioration and poor interaction with real world. Don't expect too much from the plot, it was never coherent even before budget problems. Don't pay too much attention to Christian symbolism, it's there to look cool. This show isn't about the story, it's about sending a message. It was mentioned that Shinji had a good synchronization rate. It's a number that shows the quality of feedback between EVA and pilot who senses it as their own body. Shinji was staring at his arm because he could feel it breaking. If the rate is too small, pain from EVA's damage is small too, but EVA responds poorly to commands. If it's too big, EVA will react to commands perfectly, it'll allow for great precision and agility, but if EVA loses its arm, pilot's arm will rip itself away as well. Perfect rate means maximum control that doesn't lead to permanent trauma (what happened to Rei was deemed acceptable). A.T. (Absolute Terror) field surrounds EVAs and Angels and protect them from damage. The stronger it is, the more matter and energy it repels.

Also, I'm sponsoring episodes in the following order: 1-20, 21'-26', 25-26. In other words, End of Evangelion before the original ending. Curtis approved, even though EoE was initially released as a movie. Strap in, folks, we're tumbling all the way down.

Fuck, now I have no excuse left for not watching this confusing monster....

"Shinji kicks ass" yeah, when he's not being a little bitch. GET IN THE ROBOT, SHINJI

RyoujiAyasaki

This originally came out in 1995. Also I noticed during this re watch that Ritsuko Akagi has the same voice actress as Nico Robin.
