Crane-Head Shen particularly annoys me! It's amazing that I can't stand 2 members of the Crane Crew, but really like the third! 😁

Oh wow, I just noticed that Crane is voiced by Chuck Huber who does Shou Tucker in Full Metal and Hiei in Yu Yu Hakusho. He also voices Pilaf in this series and, Android 17 & Kibito from from Z and Super.

Remember no such thing as bad student, only bad teacher.

Yeah Tien was the first "bad guy" who eventually switched sides and he acts like quite a different character than he does in Z. It's a shame main characters from early Dragonball like Tien and Piccolo kind of get left by the wayside for the saiyans later on.

Ooh, I'd have to question that one... I spent many years as a bad student to good teachers! 😂

I think that's why Super has not aged well for me or the Buu saga from Z. Even TFS made that point in the Cell Saga when Tien said "Great, now I can see how irrelevant I am vertically instead of horizontally." I mean at least with Piccolo he had the whole wisdom thing going for him, but Tien, Yamcha, and Krillin do more or less fall into the minor leagues when compared to SS God or Beerus.

With Tien, he does get better. In fact, notice the gradual progression from when we first meet him to how he is now. Like with Inashikacho, Tien threw it under the bus. But upon learning Tao was killed, he's out for blood. Not to mention, before, Tien scammed villagers with a fake defeat of Inashikacho. But now he's preferring to settle things with Goku in the ring. Sure it may be to defeat Goku in the most brutal manner, but he's at least wanting to win through a match in contrast to Shen who's first though upon seeing how strong Roshi's students are is assassination. Tien gradually changes from a thug to an honorable warrior.

Well flashbacks aren't always used to gain sympathy for a character. In this case it is being used to shed some light on Tao's relationship with Shen which would explain why Shen is so headstrong on getting revenge on Goku despite the fact that it was all Tao's fault. We are not supposed to sympathize with the backstory but instead learn why he's reacting this way without just leaving it at "he was my brother; how dare you kill him!" The writing here is a lot more reasonably since there's no way we can really sympathize with Tao and Shen who we both should dislike intensely by this point. The best we can do is see why and see where this plot thread goes.

Notice how Crane tossed aside Krillin without much effort. Can it be implied that Crane around Roshi’s level of power in this show?

I didn’t believe every flashback was designed to elicit an empathetic response. I was just observing that this one did not.
