The hyper-oats situation is a perfect example why crops should never be raised in a monoculture. (Or raised in a way that there's only one type of crop). Raising only a single crop is ultimately lead to The Great Potato Famine in Ireland from 1845 to 1852. A potato blight wiped out most of the crop (half of the crop the first year, three quarters of it the next years) and caused an eighth of the population to starve. Add into that an automated agricultural industry, that has no oversight and you've got a recipe for disaster. This is why you need farmers kids.
