Launch actually wanted to hijack the plane, but the dub was made shortly after 9/11 so they changed it. Also, Roshi wanted to leave the plane because he had to take a huge dump. That's why he spent a lot of time in the airport.

It seems to be a trend in anime that, after a time skip, someone seems surprised that some child they haven't seen in many years is taller/looks more grown up. It's like....yeah.....that's kinda how it works XD
