It certainly seems as if Tanya would have taken out 2nd Lieutenant and went about the mission... We'll see...

So I'm gonna just say this straight, all this I'm saying comes from the manga so if it's different in the novel I apologize, but Man I'm torn on this episode after reading the manga, it has its up sides and downsides comparing to the manga, the whole build up to the firing on civilians in the manga was WAY more intense, which I'm not gonna take away from the anime as it took me a good hr to 1 ½ hrs to read thru it all and I would consider myself a fairly fast reader so it's understandable that alot would be cut, it just felt like they cut TOO much, but the actual firing I feel is more brutal for 1 reason; as far as I can remember (even tho I read the manga 2 days ago) they never really showed the civilians getting shot at, and when they did there was NEVER any kids in it like how the anime did shows some kids, which I think is the worst showing the kids in here, so the whole build up I felt dissapointed with, but the strike I feel tho cut alot really was just as brutal so I'm satisfied with it. I'm also gonna make another post about grantz, the guy who tanya was making shoot at the end. Oh and another thing they kinda really glossed over was it being Tanya's idea about how to legally fire on them, it was a whole big deal in the manga about Tanya explaining how to do so, while here it's just noted as a paper she wrote.

So as I said with last post, I'm basing all my knowledge off the manga so if there is differences from the novel I apologize, but anyways, so with grantz he is actually a trainee that tanyas company had to train, and it wasn't just him, they had a bunch of recruits forced on them to train while they were stationed in the Rhine and they were supposed to knock some sense into them, which would be hard as they were the front lines "I.E they had to deal with the war WHILE training the rookies" so what tanya decided to do was a sort of night time raid where they would stealthily kidnap some republic soldiers, also another reason for the training was to knock some sense into the rookies cause when they were deployed most rookies felt like they were the heroes, like they could do anything, so they do the night raid and during it, 2 of the rookies died, which is what knocked sense into the others that they were not the heroes they thought they were, and also during it one of Tanya's main crew got injured or hurt or something, can't quite remember what, so they had an empty slot and I guess they thought grantz was a good substitute for the slot, so this would be one of his first missions which having to do that on your 1st ish would be brutal. So I really do sympathize with him. I'm sure there's alot I'm leaving out but I'm really not good at doing stuff like this, like explaining how things went and all that, I guess the best way to say it is I'm not really good with wording things as messages, like you can see it now how I'm just rambling lol, I'm so much better at explaining if I could actually talk, but like I said I'm so horrible at summarizing things and all that, but I just wanted to get across what I think are some of the main points.

Oh sorry, 3rd thing, the whole thing with A boy named Sue at the end of this episode, I don't think that's actually Canon in the manga, as we've gotten passed this point for quite a bit and Anson Sue wasn't brought back yet, which unless it's just later on story wise, I don't think actually happens and he does die in the Fjords. Specially makes me think so cause there was a whole scene with his daughter at the end of the Fjord battle, which wasn't really in the anime.

The Light Novel makes quite a big deal about how this is the first operation of its kind conducted in the world Tanya's found herself in. Previously urban fighting was restricted due to the treaties that are mentioned throughout the episode. Tanya basically gave them the blueprint to do it without breaking international law. (Though as I've said before about it only being a war crime if you lose. An international tribunal might see things differently if the Empire loses). The situation in Arene bears similarities to a region that originally belonged to France called Alsace Lorraine. That was taken as part of Prussia's (the predecessor of Germany) winnings from the Franco-Prussian war. That was later returned to France after WW1 and later served as one of the sparks that led to WW2. The actual city fighting however shares a lot more in common with the Warsaw Uprising of 1944. Including the levelling of the city and the high number of civilian casualties.

I'd need to double check, but I think it is canon, cause I vaguely remember something coming up with it, though something that happens with him soon is anime only.
