Yes this is where Toriyama decides to veer off of his usual writing when it comes to his manga. Previously he did a lot of Gag manga, Dr. Slump is actually what made him a big Mangaka (Manga artist/author) in the first place. I guess here he decided he wanted to do some more battle manga oriented stuff.

Yes it’s not his gag manga style, but it doesn’t become a battle manga until dbz. Toriyama originally wrote dragon ball as an adventure story and a version of Journey to the west. That’s why Goku is the monkey king in the original, not a Sayian, and also why there are demons and more mystical elements. Dragon Ball got so popular that people wanted it to continue even after Toriyama had reached the end of what he had originally planned, so he retconned the origins of Goku and several other characters in order to turn the series into a battle manga about aliens
