This fight was absolutely AMAZING!! Katakuri on his back is one of the big moments in One Piece for me!

I love how Katakuri purposofuly moves onto his back after Luffy beats him, I guess its his way of acknowledging Luffys strength

You can already see Katakuri’s effect on Luffy. Luffy was able to immediately recognize Pekoms in disguise despite Luffy always being previously characterized as someone who couldn’t see through simple disguises. A prime example earlier in this arc was when Luffy couldn’t tell that Gastino was Caesar Clown even after he did his signature laugh. Luffy also couldn’t come to the conclusion that Ussop was Sogeking

I love how Luffy covers Katakuri's mouth with the leftover hat after the fight, understanding that he clearly doesn't like it when people see it

I don't know about you lads but this fight, besides from being awesome, shows just how strong big mom is. It took Luffy everything he had to beat her strongest son, and even then he barely won. Just imagine how screwed Luffy and the strawhats would be if she was in her right mind which she's about to be after eating the cake, if she doesn't die of the flavorness of course. . Curtis lad, the only other that can take on big mom herself is kaido himself. She's a literal beast that on any other time would have easily defeated Luffy and co but because of plot convinience not. Easily the strongest female character in all of one piece. Simple as that. Also, that respect from Luffy to Katakuri by covering his face.

This is a heavily debated subject about what really happened here but Katakuri being "unable" to continue fighting I think few would argue for. Of course it's open to interpretation, but many consider this to be a battle of wills, Katakuri lost to Luffys way of being, will and ambition, not his actual abilities and was content accepting defeat to him. Consider this is a battle between a person who who will be as disgraceful as need be to do what he needs to and one who always has to look perfect and composed. One between one who has great ambition, and one who has none of his own and has accepted being second fiddle. This fight takes place in the mirror world. Wholecake is probably my 3rd favorite arc in the series because of the ridiculous amount of symbolism and meaning everything has. For example, Big moms kingdom is a world where everybody has to wear masks and fake who they really are to fit in. Despite Big Moms dream of diversity she actually has no tolerance whatsoever for real diversity. She doesnt want everyone to get along despite differences. She wants everyone to be the same. With a lot more! For example Pudding and Katakuri are the major examples of having to put on masks all the time. In Puddings case, you can see the result of her never being allowed to be herself. Oof, that's a long comment! Anyways Whole Cake is wrapping up and we are on the the next arc! :D

And so ends perhaps the best fight in One Piece as of yet. Luffy has climbed the ladder to being King of the Pirates this entire series. The distance between each rung getting wider and wider. This last one was practically a cliff, but now only one rung remains to reach the very top. Unfortunately for Luffy, this last step is as wide as all the previous ones combined. Good luck, Luffy.

I'd actually heavily disagree on Katakuri not being unable to continue, and i've never seen someone argue otherwise. They were both on the verge of unconsciousness, hell they did knock each other out despite Katakuri not wanting to go down. He definitely accepted defeat and let himself fall on his back as a show of respect to Luffy but he really didn't have a choice when it comes to further fighting. I also find the idea that Katakuri let Luffy win because of his 'will' kinda insulting to Luffy's growth and diminishing to the effort it took to get him there through a fight that lasted hours.

Luffy covering his mouth with the hat is a sign of high respect because he was made fun of because of his mouth and he was on hos back for one so he covered his mouth to help show some dignity to his opponent
