Anastasia Romanova is a daughter of Nicholas II, the last Russian emperor. You might remember eponymous animated movie. In real life she was shot in 1918. It's funny to see that the author resorted to a cliché and gave power of cold to a Russian character.

Okay a lot of things to cover this episode. You've already met Scipio Africanus and Hannibal Barca, the latter is infamous in Roman military history for turning a number of subjugated tribes in rebellion against Rome and marching them over the Alps to conquer Rome. Who were Carthage's (modern day Tunisia) Hannibal's country's ancestral enemies. His secret weapons were War Elephants that some historians have theorized actually came all the way from India. Scipio is the man that finally defeated Hannibal. The two guys who like arguing over cigarettes and shooting people. Are none other than Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, leaders of the Wild Bunch, a band of bank and train robbers from the turn of the century. The man in Black with the Samurai sword is Hijikata Toshizo Vice Commander of the Shinsengumi a secret police force used by the Japanese Shogunate during the final years of the Shogunate. They were recruited from the Fencing Schools of Tokyo. Hijikata was one of the last surviving members of its leadership. He died in Hokkaido (northernmost island of Japan) fighting against the Japanese government that had risen up in support of the Emperor over the Shogun. Naoshi Kanno (our potty mouthed friend there) was a Japanese Navy fighter Ace during WW2. He was credited with shooting down 25 American aircraft. He was commander of the 301st "Shinsengumi" Squadron (homages to Samurai were very popular with Japanese military men during WW2) which was a subdivision of an elite group of fighter pilots. Which were considered to be too valuable to waste on Kamikaze attacks. They were equipped with the best fighter the Japanese had at their disposal at the time. Which was considered to be a match for American fighters at the time. The barrel of one of his guns exploded while intercepting an American bomber squadron. He went missing shortly afterwards and was presumed dead, he was 23.

So, from these first 3 episodes the series kinda illuminates who the Drifter's and End's are, basically people of historical significance who are brought into the world at the moment of their death, only clearly Ends are sent there to conquer it while Drifters are sent to protect it. Knowing this, i'd like you to try and figure out who the Black King is, the series gives plenty of implications but no clear answers. All imma say is, its ballsy af On another note, was very surprised you didn't catch the Wild Bunch, but thankfully you got Phil to explain that xD
