This whole arc has some neat parallels to it: throughout all of this we've seen the detective have some glaring "imperfections" like PTSD and alcoholism (which has lead to many people shunning him), but ultimately we as viewers perceive him as a good person, whereas Johan is portrayed as an utterly perfect human being who is considered a great person by all the characters in Munich... but we as viewers perceive him as quite the opposite!

I've worked in a place where every coworker was either an alcoholic or addicted to hard drugs and an alcoholic. I've seen alot of people spiral out of control regardless of whether they were good people or not. and many of those people often give up on trying to get better. It's partially why I left the job among other things. but he's put so much effort into getting clean and has come a long way despite not having anyone with him to keep him accountable. Deep within him he has something so traumatizing from his past and not having the support from anyone close to him. he really is a man standing on a razors edge.

I think Richard's first mistake was hanging around in a Cafe where Alcohol is served in addition to coffee. That and not avoiding places where there's a lot of Bars. The Forbidden Fruit is a lot more tempting when it's right there for you to see.
