Here, Reiner was only sarcastically calling them devils, and humanizing them at the same time.

"That's what you went with bro?" Well yeah, that was sort of the whole point. Reiner wasn't describing devils, but the kind of somewhat flawed, perfectly normal people you can find anywhere. Hence why his mother looked so terrified.

It's great how many layers some of these scenes have. Like, for example, when Reiner cuts off Galliard when Galliard is questioning the military's plans because Reiner is aware that the room they are in is bugged which is all thanks to Zeke saying that the military are not in this room specifically, implying that they are somewhere nearby and listening.

Yeah, I was also wondering if Curtis caught that or took him seriously. I think this goes one level deeper though. I think Reiner, in a way, really does hate them for the things that he talks about because it forced him to view the "devils" as humans. He can no longer dehumanise them to absolve himself of guilt. If only they had been devils like I was told, then I wouldn't have to feel this pain and guilt.

You know, I find more similarities with this story to the Palestine-Israel conflict / wars way more than the holocaust. It's a he said she said kind of war that has a similar time period to the ancient times, and now a long drawn out war where both sides have victims to the enemy and their own side. Marleyans representing the israelis and the Eldians representing the palestinians whilst the Eldians within Marley represent Arab Israelis. The Island of eldians being gaza, and hell, even the Eldians are called "the mid-east" forces (sounds somewhat familiar to real life lmao). Just my take on it. There's a lot more similarities I can point out but I don't want to get too political. :')
