It seems it was a REALLY good thing Volg showed up! This was a painful, but crucial, learning experience for Ippo!

No sure if you caught on to my comment last episode. But give it a read to refresh your memory on Volg's backstory with his Mom. Also, Dankichi (the trainer in America) is the same trainer of the doctor with the swallow (bird) punch. Just as a reminder from that movie, Coach Kamogawa said his skills surpassed even his own when they fought but the reason Kamogawa was able to beat him was because Dankichi had a glass jaw. A great trainer for someone as talented as Volg for sure. W/O any spoilers, try to remember Dankichi as he may come up later on. :D

Curtis I understand some of the frustration with the over emphasis on the Dempsey and your assessment of how Ippo can switch it up. I always took a lot of the emphasis on the Dempsey in the story as a bit of a representation of ippo’s type of fighting style as a whole - he’s not a pure brawler but on the context of the story he basically is a throwback slugger in many ways which was becoming less common. And you have fighting instincts so you pick up on this stuff much faster - the story the mangaka is trying to write is to appeal to hardcore boxing fans while still being paced enough for casual just anime fans who don’t know fighting. I think it gets frustrating at times for those of us with experience but all in all I think the story generally does a good job walking that balance well.

In general, I agree. One of the main reasons I enjoy this show so much is because of how true it stays to the art of boxing... And yes, you will see me get frustrated when the story detours a little outside the lines of reality, but that's in the interest of maintaining the focus of those who aren't hardcore boxing nerds like me, and is a necessity... It won't stop me from analyzing and breaking things down, though, as - positive or negative - it's something I really enjoy about this show.

So, I'd like to start by saying thanks to Curtis, 6 years ago when I was in grade 12 I joined this community on youtube and after that I joined the patreon, and today I can say proudly that I'm officially a senior medical student. And that Curtis, his reactions and this community have become an integral part of my daily life. You have no idea how many times I've been here for a laugh after a rough exam or a bad day. So thank you everyone for an awesome 6 years and many more to come

Thank YOU, My Friend, and HUGE congrats on your education accomplishments! Very impressive!!

I think i can say this because the anime won't cover it for numerous seasons even if we ever do get more.. Ippo doesn't realize about mixing in uppers and moving directions with the dempsy roll MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH Later so its a little frustrating tbh

WHOLESOME DEUS

The Dempsey roll works great against a retreating opponent (that's how Jack used it) so if sawamura steps back to counter and his timing is off or he misses then that should make the Dempsey roll 2 to 3x more effective. It's a high risk, high gain strategy.

On a separate note, anyone watching the Alvarez/Saunders fight tonight? Not the biggest Alvarez fan but Saunders is a bit of a jerk IMO and I think canelo outclasses him.
