Well that highly explains why he wasn't there for Ace. Great Sabo episode!

Sabo's flashback is filler. But this is at least one of the better opportunities for the anime to flesh out something that the manga never addressed, providing the opportunity to have an episode like this without stretching the existing material any further. So no complaints from me :)

I think most of these filler that are woven in between the canon are actually things that oda meant to show in the manga but couldn't. Although I don't have any evidence to back that up. I just heard it somewhere and it made sense.

I think it's a genuine testament to Dragon's character when his veins pop out after seeing Sabo in a near death state. He's stern and a hardass, but he cares about people.
